_____________________ University of Los Andes | Bogotá, Colombia | c. 2009 • Born out of a turbulent time of swift political change, industrialization, and economic growth in Colombia, the University of Los Andes, also known as Uniandes, was founded on the need for skilled labor and a desire to modernize education. Established in 1948 by educator and politician Mario Laserna Pinzón, it is the first nonsectarian and non-politically affiliated university in Colombia • After visiting Columbia University in New York City, Pinzón returned home and modeled Uniandes after American universities, offering both technical & liberal arts programs. His goal was to provide Colombia with a university that would foster professionals to help further develop the country and would help students become leaders in their respective fields • Much of Uniandes campus is located in Bogota’s historic Candelaria district alongside many of the city’s universities, banks, businesses, museums, theaters, and art galleries. A mix of renovated industrial and religious buildings as well as newly built facilities, the campus is home to over 100 classrooms, 200+ labs, a sports center, and a major library system • Built in 2009, the sports center, also called La Caneca, contains a semi-Olympic size swimming pool. Located on the center’s fifth floor, the pool is surrounded by stained glass windows that offer unparalleled views of Bogota. At 5 1⁄2 feet deep and with six lanes, the pool is used strictly for competition; however, students can request to use a single lane by making a reservation • Today, Uniandes continues to carry out its mission as “an autonomous, independent, and innovative institution that fosters pluralism, tolerance, and respect for ideas...” It’s consistently ranked one of Colombia’s top universities and is one of the top 10 Latin American universities in the world • Know more? _____________________ Orcas Island Ferry | San Juan Islands, Washington | c. 1951 • Orcas Island is the largest among the San Juan Islands, an archipelago located in the United States’ Pacific Northwest between Washington State and Canada’s Vancouver Island. Without any bridges to the San Juan Islands curious visitors must travel to Orcas Island by sea or air • First held by Spain, the Islands were eventually claimed by England and then relinquished to the United States under the treaty signed after the War of 1812. In the treaty, the countries agreed that land below the 49th parallel belonged to the U.S. The Oregon territory, including Washington state and the San Juan Islands, was shared by the U.S. and England until the mid-19th century • While Orcas Island’s name is short in length, its origin holds a long and varied history. Orcas is a shortened form of “Horcasitas” taken from Juan Vincente de Güemes Padilla Horcasitas y Aguayo, the Viceroy of Mexico who explored the Pacific Northwest in 1791. Horcasitas was on expedition under Fransisco de Eliza who had given parts of the archipelago the name Orcas • When British naval officer Henry Kellet reorganized Britain’s nautical charts in 1847, he officially assigned the name Orcas to the island. This eliminated the traditionally patriotic American names that had previously been given to the San Juans. The Island had been named “Hull Island” after American Commodore Issac Hull; additional features were named “Ironsides Inlet” after the American ship the U.S.S. Constitution also known as Old Ironsides, and “Guerrier Bay” after the British warship that had been captured during the War • Today, travelers can board the Orcas Island Ferry under the Washington State Ferries system to visit Orcas Island. With its many villages, museums, and parks, the Island continues to be a destination for modern-day explorers from all over the world • Know more? ________________________ Tsereteli Station | Tbilisi, Georgia | c.1979 • In Tbilisi, the capital city of Georgia, miles of transit rail wind beneath the city streets connecting metro stations bearing vivid interiors. One such station, Tsereteli Station, located on the Saburtalo Line that extends to the western residential districts of the city boasts bright blue ceilings and bears the name of one of the country’s most revered poets, Akaki Tsereteli • Opened in 1979, Tsereteli Station is part of the Tbilisi Metro, the first and only metro system in Georgia and the fourth metro of the former Soviet Union. Tbilisi was considered one of the most important cities at the height of the USSR due to its position in the Caucasus as well as its influence as a cultural and political center. It grew rapidly during the 20th century and turned into a transportation hub • The transit system expanded into a two line, 23 station network until the 1990s when financial constraints following the breakup of the Soviet Union stifled infrastructure. Due to lack of electricity, the Metro usually was out of service. As the region recovered from the collapse, the stations saw a rise in crime until 2004 when security and administration reforms restored order to the railways • The Tbilisi Metro is currently undergoing a major rehabilitation effort with the modernization of its many stations and trains. The Georgian government has dedicated efforts to elevate the Metro to European standards and transform it into a more prestigious public transport system. As of 2018, the Metro is expanding to support seven new stations and will form a new line connecting central Tbilisi to the city’s suburbs and airport • Know more?
